5 reasons why I decided to get my first full time job at 30!

Let’s face it. I just knew I was going to be unemployable FOREVER!

I currently have three income streams through my business with online coaching, speaking, and book sales. The part-time income is good, but I know I still have a lot to learn to run a successful, profitable, and sustainable business. I’ve had internships, graduate assistantships, volunteer opportunities and even worked 35-40+ shifts at The Cheesecake Factory for the past three years.

The pandemic was the perfect time for me to weigh the pros and cons of getting a 9-5 while I continue to run a business and monetize my expertise. I told myself that it would be on my terms if I were ever to get a job.

Here are my top 5 reasons:

  • I can Work From Home.
    • The company is 100% remote. I enjoy the flexibility of being able to work from anywhere. All I need is a computer and a great internet connection, and I’m all set! Before the bad snow storm in Texas, I flew to Arizona to babysit my nieces and nephew during Valentine’s Day weekend. I stayed until March 1st due to power outages and water loss but didn’t miss a beat with work. I was so worried about going home, not realizing I can work from wherever. It was such a sigh of relief.
  • Great Company and Mission
    • I knew I wanted to work for a company with values and a mission I could stand behind. During the age of Black Lives Matter, I also wanted to make sure the company is all about inclusiveness and makes a conscious effort to hire more people that look like me. On my virtual interview, I didn’t have to dumb down my greatness and play down my accomplishments as an Entrepreneur. In past interviews, I felt as though it was intimidating to say I was a Founder of a company. I even changed my title to appease Hiring Managers. The company encourages all employees to be creative and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Work-Life Balance
    • I was sold when they said we have unlimited paid time off. I don’t know how often I will use it, but it’s always nice to have. To help with adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that works best for me, the company offers support in various ways, including access to resources through the Calm app (which I use religiously) and quarterly company-wide mental health day(s) off. In addition to unlimited paid time off and paid federal holidays employees to receive, we also have a mandatory company-wide shut down during the last weeks of December through New Year’s Day.
  • Continued Growth
    • I chose this job and this company because I wanted to be challenged. The leadership is impressive; the team is so supportive, encouraging, and continues to help me grow. One of the core values is “Let’s Grow!” Dream big, work hard, learn from your mistakes, adopt a growth mindset, never give up. Challenge yourself to set ambitious but achievable goals. Go the extra mile when necessary. If something isn’t working, seek advice and experiment with new solutions. Having a growth mindset is the key to working within a start-up.
  • Mo’ Money
    • Working in Tech is where the money resides. Literally. The tech sector is always evolving and moving forward, and it also helps that I thrive in a fast-paced, continually changing environment that comes with the tech industry’s territory. A bonus perk is that I am rewarded for my hard work, and it is reflected on my paycheck.

You can still monetize your expertise and even work your 9-5! Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
